BanglaMegafonoDear All,

The year 2014 has come to an end. It was a year marked with many important events most of which revolved around the International Year of Family Farming (IYFF).

The Food and Agricultural Organization of the United Nations (FAO) was invited by the United Nations General Assembly to facilitate the implementation of the IYFF and this led to much collaboration with its partner the World Association of Community Radio Broadcasters (AMARC).

ComDev Asia is a joint FAO-AMARC initiative to support development, communication and community media professionals based in Asia-Pacific to:

  • share experiences and knowledge resources on communication for rural development
  • strengthen capacities and facilitate fruitful partnerships at regional and country level
  • promote a regional agenda and advocate for communication in the rural sector

ComDev Asia is one of the three FAO-AMARC regional platforms - together with Onda Rural and Yenkasa Africa - designed to promote knowledge sharing and joint initiatives in communication for agriculture and rural development. These regional platforms provide a space to share information, document best practices and chart the way forward in the regions.

This was evident during the virtual consultations that took place between 25 August to 12 September, 2014 to collect different regional and sector perspectives from Asia Pacific, Africa and Latin America on Communication for Development, community media and ICTs for family farming and rural development. Held simultaneously on the three regional platforms, the consultations saw the active participation from development professionals, communication and community media practitioners, civil society organizations, rural development agencies, government representatives, scholars and private sector.

The results of these regional consultations were presented in the framework of the Forum on Communication for Development and Community Media for Family Farming (FCCM) which took place in Rome, Italy from the 23-24 October 2014.

The FCCM Final Statement was then read out by AMARC President, Maria Pia Matta, at the Global Dialogue on Family Farming held on 27 and 28 October 2014 in FAO headquarters. The International Year of Family Farming (IYFF) officially concluded on 27 November, 2014 in Manila, the Philippines.

ComDev Asia has been deeply involved in the IYFF agenda, and has given its contribution to highlighting the importance of family farming for poverty reduction and global food security.

We would like to thank all of you for your interest in ComDev Asia initiatives, and look forward to your continued cooperation and participation in the coming year.

Season’s greetings and best wishes for 2015!
